Question: Am I in a better position for College application because I am younger ?

I migrated from China to New York last year. Now, I am in High School , grade 10. My adviser told me that I will graduate in June ,2011.

1. ) So, I want to know , If I want to get into a good college, except excellent GPA , and SAT score, need something else?

2. ) what's more, yesterday , One of my schoolmates told me that he also will graduate in the same time as me. Because he didn't get the credit translation from China , he has been in this school for 2 years to get 44 credits . So his English is better than me obviously .
For example , if he will apply for the same college as me, am I in better position for the competion?
Because I am 18 now and he is 20 , he have been in college one year in China . so absolutely , he is better than me on some conditions . So, will the counselor of the college put me in the lower than him ? Am I have some superiority by me age ?

I wonder it , thank you .

Answer: Age does not play much of a factor in college admissions. If anything, being a bit older might be to your advantage because it can be a sign of maturity. But American college students are usually 18 when they start, so for you age should play no role.

English skills, on the other hand, play a pretty substantial role in admission to American schools. Admissions officers want to make sure that you will have no trouble completing all of your courses in English (other than foreign language courses, obviously.) If you can spend more time in school to improve your English skills, I would strongly recommend doing so before applying. Also, have someone (i.e. a native English speaker) read your application essays when it comes time to apply.
