Credit Score Scam Craigslist

Question: Possible Apartment Scam or Not?

I am looking to rent an apartment that I found on Craigslist. With everything that I have seen on tv and red on the internet, I want to make sure I am not walking into a trap. The manager called me back and is having me meet with the super today to check out the apartment.

Everything seems legit but he said after I check out the apartment, I can fax him my info, he told me he didnt need to do a credit check if I can provide him with recent credit reports and scores. Shouldn't I be meeting him to submit all this info and shouldn't he want to do an credit check?

This is my first apartment so I am very nervous and weary. As of yet he has not asked for money or any personal info but I am just really nervous because I found it on craigslist. It is $880 for a 1 bedroom in the BX, Castle Hill Section, rent controlled.

Answer: I understand being nervous and it is good to be couscous but not every thing on Criagslist is a scam.

It is not unusual to never meet the landlord face to face in this day & age. It has become pretty standard to do many things by fax & email especially if he does not live locally. If you give him a copy of a current report then he does not have to pay for it himself. What ever copy you can give him would give him the same information as he would get on his own.

You can search the local tax records and confirm that this guy does own the unit. If he is an agent of the owner then you will not find that, but you can ask him to e-mail you something proving that he has the right to rent out the unit.

EDIT: Even when you pull your own Credit it does not give any account numbers. t does not even have asny contact information for who you owe $ to.
