Credit Score Information Disclosure

Question: disclosing personal information to landlords?

How much personal information do you have to disclose to a potential landlord these days? Does a landlord really need your SSN, checking/saving account #, disclosure of bills (student loads, auto loan and insurance, etc.). I can understand a Credit Score check but everything else seems to be over kill and an invasion of privacy. Plus, I cannot find any law that dictates that you HAVE to disclose any of this stuff to any private merchant, i.e. landlord.

Answer: You are correct, there isn't a law that requires disclosure. At the same time there is no law forcing anyone to rent to you without it.

Unless you are willing to verify that you have the capabilty to pay the rent very very few people would risk allowing you access to their property.

I do not pay any attention to Credit Score, I look at the Credit Report to see if you pay your bills, and if you have any judgments against you. This is not private when you are talking about taking up residency in my house.
