Credit Report Errors
How to check your credit reports?
When checking your credit reports from the
three major credit reporting bureaus, compare your information
on file to the information on your three separate credit
reports. Check everything, from account numbers to high
balances to payment dates. To compare some of this information
you are going to have to sort through some of your old
records.
If the items on the credit report are
favorable, do not worry too much about cross-checking them
(unless they are accounts that are closed, but are not listed
as closed). If they are negative, you should examine them very
closely for errors.
Disputing bills on your credit report
Credit card bills is among one of the top
reasons why people file credit report disputes. If you find
errors on your credit report regarding your credit card bills,
you should know how to resolve the credit report errors.
Resolving these credit card problems before they affect your
credit report is the simplest and best way to maintain good
credit.
Credit cards errors on your credit
report
If you find an error on your credit report
on a current credit card bill (not credit reports, but an
actual bill from one of your credit cards), you need to:
-
contact your credit card company directly. Credit
reporting agencies do not handle these credit card
disputes, and
-
-
send a letter to creditor regarding billing error.
A phone call is not the way to handle credit
report disputes or credit card disputes. You need to put it in
writing for the Fair Credit Billing Act to cover you on this
situation.
