Question: I just went to a car dealership they pulled my credit scores and they were way lower then what I just pulled?

When the guy told me I was so surprised. I went home and looked at my credit score tracker. Then I bought my other two scores. ALL completely higher then what he told me. Is this a scam? What should I do?

Answer: This is not a scam. The FICO scores you get online are NOT the same that car dealers get. In fact, online scores vary, depending on which service you use.

One thing most people don't understand is that when a dealer pulls up your credit history, it's getting a different response than you'll get yourself. Why? Because every dealer who submits your information to the credit bureaus must also include his business account number. This tells the bureau that its a car dealership and sends it info specific to that person's car financing worthiness. And since the info is tailored to that, the FICO score will be different from the "general usage" score you can get yourself online.

But it's not just car dealers that gets business specific information. It would also happen if you applied for a home loan. The score the home lender pulls up will be different than what the dealership gets on the same person.

What you get online does not count when you want to make a major purchase like a car or a house. The only score that counts is the one the finance person gets.
