Cease Communication Notice to the Collection Agencies
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a consumer or debtor can advise a debt collector in writing that he or she will not be paying the debt and advise the debt collector to stop all future communication regarding the debt. This is known as the cease communication notice.
When the collection agency receives the Cease Communication Notice, the only subsequent communication the collection agency may send to the debtor is for the purpose of:
-
Advising the debtor that the collection agency is stopping any future collection attempts
-
Advising the debtor that the collection agency may pursue other means of collecting debt.
-
Advising the debtor of the collection agency’s intention to pursue a specific remedy to collect the debt.
